A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT One of the most beautiful and spiritually fulfilling worship services I have ever attended was on February 6, 2005 at New Philadelphia Moravian. The occasion was the memorial service for Sr. Lahoma Gray and I think what made it so special was the full participation of the Gray family – the church was packed. Br. Joe read Scripture, and Sam, Steve, Martha and the twins sang a number of songs and hymns as a tribute to their mother. It was announced previously that memorial gifts be designated for missions, through the Church. The Mission Committee of New Philadelphia voted unanimously to see that the funds go for a reprinting of the Miskito Bible because the current supply has been depleted. Br. George Goff, among many others, has been giving these out over the past six years with great success and more are desperately needed. We are researching the specifics of this reprinting and will follow through as soon as the information is available. Considering the lifelong commitment that the Gray family has made to the people of Honduras and Nicaragua, nothing could be a more fitting tribute to the memory of Lahoma Gray. If you would like to be a partner with us, please send your gifts to New Philadelphia Moravian – Lahoma Gray Memorial. Work on the Mission Residence continues. In addition to the refinished floors, the two bedrooms, the living room, and a portion of the hallways have been painted. Turn out of volunteer help has been rather disappointing. Much remains to be done before we are ready for our first guests, due to arrive late March. Please keep this project in your prayers. Jack Geis - President LETTERS FROM CENTAL AMERICA TO DR. MARX Here is some information from a couple of Miskito letters that may interest you. The first is from Timoteo Herrera Martinez. I know him from the time I made regular visits to Tukurun. Now he wrote from Siksayeri in Nicaragua, among the rapids on the upper Rio Coco. He said he is sending his letter with a work crew from Wisconsin. They had been in Siksayeri constructing houses that |
had been destroyed by Hurricane Mitch. He wrote in answer to a letter we had sent. He begs for a copy of the Miskito hymn book and a copy of the Passion Week manual in Miskito. We don’t have either of those to send (nor have I found one on asking former missionaries). Another letter is from Renato Cardona. He wrote from Krau Sirpi on the Rio Patuca, Honduras. He wrote that he graduated from the Bible Institute 7 years ago and has been working in Krau Sirpi since then among the Sumu people (Tawaka). He wrote that their chapel is falling down. He thinks it would be better to build one of cement because it is getting harder to get lumber and the termites would not destroy the cement. So he would like to have some help to build a new and better church. He writes that the Lord’s work is growing. He writes in Miskito although he was born as a Sumu and feels that the Lord wants him to work among his own people. He does not receive any salary and he gives the names of his four children. These letters were received by Dr. Sam Marx, and he shares them with ONWARD. If you would like to help, call or write to Dr. Marx, address in the Daily Text Directory.
