The Final Word April, 2005

John H. Giesler

One of the delights of being editor of ONWARD is to meet people from around the world, and just across the street. The cover story this month is one such occasion. Through the kindness of Br. Al Reynolds we received a copy of an article that appeared in an Indian advocacy newspaper called Indian Country Today, which is published in New York State. Philip Burnham, a free- lance writer lives in Washington, DC and got to meet Armstrong Wiggins who lives nearby. Armstrong grew up in the Moravian Church, in a small Nicaraguan Miskito village, worked for Dr. Ned and Emily Buttner Wallace at the Port Hospital. He went to Madison, WI where the Wallaces later lived. and got further education there. He married one of our friends from Bonanza and found work with the Indian Law Research Center in Washington. His tri-lingual skills were a great help in his work and he has excelled by his energy and wisdom. Read about one of his success stories! We thank Br. Burnham for permission to reprint his great story. We hope someone can help the Kundan family find work for Shalomel. It will help many people as his family for several generations has helped thousands in Asia. Sr. Celeste Handy is a delightful young Christian leader who brings joy where ever she is. Sr. Sabina Hunter is a leader in our Labrador Church and has a burden for the young people of her land. Our president shares joys and disappointments with us. Br Bob leads us in prayer again. Dr. Marx shares concerns with us from his friends in C.A. We just received the sad news of the home-going of Bishop Joe Cooper in N. Ireland. After a lifetime of service to the Moravian Church in the British Isles, he and his wife Edna began to publish a series of booklets on interesting pieces and places around the Moravian Church world. There are now more than 30 in print. They are delightful! He will be missed. We offer heartfelt condolences to his family. Sr. Mallie Graham tells us of a mission project at Home Church to help a Moravian student from South Africa in Salem College by holding a rummage sale. If you would like to donate “special treasures”, call 924.9409 for details. The sale will be a huge affair with Salemtowne, the World Mission Shop, and the Moravian Book and Gift Shop having tables to sell their items as well. There will be lots of fun, fellowship, and shopping at this special event in the Home Fellowship Hall on Saturday, April 23, from 7am to 2pm.     JHG
