We hope each of you had a blessed Christmas and have a good start on a truly happy New Year. Thanks to our contributors to this issue. We received an update on the rescue of the Zinzendorf Castle in Berthlesdorf, seized by the Nazis, then the Communists, but now in friendly hands. Br. Peter Vogt is the new co-Pastor of Niesky Congregation, site of the large beautiful Moravian Hospital administered by the Emmaus Deaconess program. The Jamaica Moravians are in the midst of a very extensive 250th Anniversary. The extensive newspaper account tells about much of it. The paper also tells elsewhere about three stalwart Moravian leaders who are being honored by a postage stamp series; Rev. Walter Malton O’Meally; Bishop S. U. Hastings; and Sr. Mary Morris Knibb. Thanks go to Br. Al Reynolds for getting these to us. Br. Fred Linyard in the Moravian Messenger gave us the article on HIV-Aids by Dr. Claire Summers. Our president, Br. Jack Geis and our Bishop, Br. Bob Iobst both challenge us to work and pray for mission all over the world. Br. Mark Ebert challenges work crew volunteers to serve in Honduras this year. Br. George Chiddie and his crew from Ardmore continue to collate, fold and stick address labels and mail over 1400 copies of ONWARD. Bill Rosenbaum puts ONWARD online. We owe all a big thank you. We recently received three wonderful books about Labrador. 1.Reflections From A Snowhouse, by Rev. F.W. Peacock (40 years Moravian missionary in Labrador). 2.Labrador Odyssey. The Journal and Photographs of Eliot Curwen on the Second Voyage of Wilfred Grenfell, 1893. Ed. Ronald Rompkey. 3.The Story of Labrador by Bill Rompkey. We have lots of good reading and lots of pictures to study and a great deal of the history and information about the difficulties of living in the Arctic and our Moravian work there. Another book we have used in our morning devotions contains much about our church’s history and missions, and well written short articles on our Protestant heroes. It is titled The One Year Book of Christian History, by E. Michael and Sharon Rusten. It is published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. Wheaton, IL. Books are a wonderful way to learn and keep growing in our Christian faith. We meet so many people, past and present, who have faced great problems but have been able to overcome them because of their faith in Christ. All the best. JHG |
