A NEW BISHOP IN HOLLAND Br. Humbert Hessen had served the church faithfully for many years and retired at Boxtel, Netherlands when the Continental Provincial Synod in June elected him to be a Bishop of the Unity. The Consecration was only the second to take place in the splendid Moravian church at Zeist. The first had been in 1783! Br. Hessen was the first Surinamese member living in the Netherlands to be consecrated Bishop, and there was great excitement as all the people came together on Sunday November 21, 2004. As we arrived, a brass band played hymns at the church door. Three choirs enriched the worship with their singing. Sr. Jackie Morten read the scripture lesson and brought a greeting on behalf of the Unity Board. Bishops from a number of Provinces took part in the service. The sermon on the text for the day, “God is with you in all that you do” (Gen.21, 22), was preached by Br. John Kent ,who came from Suriname, and the Ordination Prayer was given by Br. John McOwat. Br. Henning Schlimm led the worship and was supported in the act of consecration by the brethren Kent and McOwat. Also present to bring greetings were the brethren Helmut Reichel and Theo Clemens. A number of greetings were given by ecumenical guests and others during the Lovefeast which followed the service. So ended a memorable occasion and we pray that Br. Hessen and his wife Erica will be blessed in this new position. SISTER LAHOMA GRAY – WITH THE LORD As we prepare this issue of ONWARD we received word that Sr. Lahoma has been called home and released from her earthly cares. Many, if not most of you, who read this, knew her. She gave her life long love to her Lord Jesus, to the care for her family, to serving Christ in many places, and always giving everyone she met a gracious smile and her full attention. She and her partner, Joe, served the Moravian Church in North Carolina, Nicaragua, Honduras, and even in Sierra Leone in Africa. Wherever they were, there was music, joy and sharing. Such talent, devotion and love marked their every endeavor. We extend to her husband, Joe, their five children, the grands and even a great-grand child our deepest consolation. We know that there will be joy in heaven and singing here on earth because she spread her love here. JHG
