PRAYER FOCUS April, 2003 A Trip to Ahuas, Honduras |
|
| “Praise God” is the leading phrase of four of eleven paragraphs of “And update from the Honduras Medical Program” published in the November 2002 copy of The Moravian. This accurately captures the spirit in Ahuas at Clinica Evangélica Morava. The Moravian Church and the Reformed Church in America support this endeavor now. Tommy Waggoner (Presbyterian electrician), Bell Tedder (Baptist electrician), Clyde Edwards (Presbyterian anesthetist), and Dr. Jud Milam (Presbyterian minister) traveled with me in early January for a short-term mission trip. Our first patient in the operating room was a Catholic woman. On the day that we left a group from Norway Youth with a Mission (YWAM) arrived to help. This place is truly evangelical and brings Christians from all over the world together to bring health care to those in need. But, it is like a spiritual well and all who go there are blessed in unexpected ways. The hard work and years of service that Dr. Sam and Sr. Grace Marx rendered still bring spiritual and physical health to La Mosquitia. My last visit before this year was in 1986 with them. Many people still fondly remember their long tenure there. |
Some things have changed physically. There are new buildings, and
the equipment has been improved. Many children remain, but they speak
Spanish instead of Miskito. Some families now have their own generators
and there are more lights and electrical appliances. There are now some
small trucks in Ahuas. George and Ruth Goff who trained in the United
States at Moody Bible Institute and Aviation School are now residents of
Ahuas. George is an accomplished pilot and preacher, bringing many
people to Christ as he travels from town to town by air. One
important thing has not changed. That is the strong, abiding faith
in God. The rift in the church continues but healing is evident.
Some tensions remain, but things are getting worked out and there is
acceptance of each side’s views. Moravians can
be proud of the strong faith of Drs. Norvelle Goff and Gerard Rudy. Each
day in the doctors’ home and in the clinic begins with devotions. Prayer
is an integral part of every step of the day. As we begin each procedure
in the operating room, just before the patient drifts to sleep, a prayer
is said in the presence of the family and a favorite hymn is sung. What a wonderful spirit and testament to God for help in our lives. Dr. John Arrowood Rural Hall Moravian Church |
