  A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Where do we go from here? I am referring to the end of major combat activity in Iraq. Already there are many relief agencies and NGOs [non governmental organizations] operating, or planning to in the near future, in that war torn country. History is repeating itself - vis a vis the aftermath in Afghanistan. Do Moravians have a place in either country?

Many religious organizations are putting together strategies for providing humanitarian aid while at the same time sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Baptists, Samaritan's Purse, and Campus Crusade for Christ are just a few of those who have already gone public. If you believe, as The Mission Society does, that Jesus Christ is THE way to salvation, then what should be our response?

One of the methods used with great success is the showing of the "Jesus" film. Campus Crusade has a major project underway to make that film and videotapes available to those who have never heard of Him. Br. George Goff has used this instrument in Honduras and shares a marvelous testimony to its effectiveness. Similarly, Br Jorgen Boytler has done the same thing with tribes along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. Whom could we identify as the Messenger? To witness in a Muslim culture takes training, experience, and wisdom. Zinzendorf knew the formula; true humility and becoming as a slave to the slaves. St Paul expressed the same sentiment in I Corinthians 9:19-24. Could it be that the Moravian Believers in Tanzania are best equipped to serve? After all, even though Islam is a major presence there, our Church continues to grow and flourish.

Pray that we might be emboldened to step into the breach - under the leading of  The Holy Spirit.

Jack Geis

ONWARD ON THE WWW

It is our plan to put ONWARD on the world wide web to help make available in time for congregations who republish portions or all of the news for their congregation to meet their deadlines for their newsletters. We know of a number of American churches that do this.

We also want to make it available to overseas individuals and congregations so they will not have to pay for individual subscriptions. If each church, which has a number of members who are subscribers would download and share ONWARD we would be able to save valuable postage. We will send ONWARD to any Moravian Minister who will share in this way a free subscription to ONWARD.

We are not allowed to send ONWARD by e-mail but it can be published.

To reach the web site, here is the address:

MORAVIAN MISSION HISTORIANS

If you are a Moravian Mission history buff, we’ve got a real treat for you. Karl H. Offen, Ph.D., a professor on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma, is a longtime student of the Moravian Mission in Nicaragua and the life of the Miskitu Indians. He shares his treasury of the History of the Miskito Coast in dozens of wonderful pictures. I have seen a number of them but many were new to me. He has pictures of many of the missionaries I have read about, but never had a picture of them. There is a precious picture of Rev. Rinkart Watson with their four young children. He has maps and wonderful pictures. http://home.earthlink.net%7Ehoffen/ko/tour.html#current       Good hunting!
