This issue reflects the world-wide Moravian Church more than usual with several new writers and interesting items of international origin. Our cover story reflects this as Br. Ceipe wrote in his native Latvian, Sr. Doering translated it into German, and Br. Martin, from Raleigh rendered it into English. It gives us news of the reopening of the Moravian work that was stopped during the 1st World War. The Diaspora in the Baltic States was the largest of the many areas awakened by the evangelistic enthusiasm, with about 40,000 persons involved. The closing was a real lose to the Unity, as many missionaries came from this work. We are indebted to Br. Al Reynolds of Frederick, MD for finding this notice of the recent court activities in Connecticut where several small remnants of Indian tribes are seeking to recover some of their ancient lands and be recognized by the US Government. The important documentation has come from our Indian Mission diaries housed in Bethlehem. Sometimes it is good to save things! Our new interest in the relationship between our church and the Cherokees has been formalized into a Historical Society. We are indebted to Sr. Anna Smith who is the driving force of the society. Once again the World Mission Shop has invested over $12,310.00 in mission outreach around the world. Br. Eckhard Buchholz, a German Moravian, who served as a missionary in South Africa, then returned to Germany where he maintained a wonderful world wide web site about Moravian missions around the world. A short time ago he accepted a call to serve the British province as a pastor in Northern Ireland. He and his wife participated in an interesting celebration in London of the fall of apartheid ten years ago in South Africa. His report shows the complexity of the results with hope for the future. We got this article from the January issue of the Moravian Messenger, Br. Fred Linyard, editor. Br. Bob Iobst again invites us into his global concerns, to pray about people, places and things Christ is doing around the world. What a great way to begin your day, with your Bible, your Hymnal, your Daily Texts and Pray Every Day! Br. Jack Geis endorses prayer as a vital part of support for all we do. Barbara and I attended a great lecture on the use of the lot in the early Moravian Church that Br. Dan Crews delivered. We thought we heard it all, but the next day we received the letter of Br. Bent, due to the kindness of Bishop Iobst, with a 21st century use of the lot. We were delighted to see how people of faith seek the leading of the Holy Spirit. We always are touched by the insights and activities of Br. Sam Propsom and family as they learn more about the culture of Labrador and how they can build the Church in that culture. We are inspired at their physical strength to meet the needs of everyday life. They have a wonderful monthly newsletter on the internet where you can get pictures as well as their news. |
