The Final Word March, 2004

John H. Giesler

We are grateful to Sr. Louise Kapp for writing her article about Irvin and Gretta Jean Leinbach from her bed recovering from a fall. Her gratitude to the Leinbachs and her dedication to missions is greater than her pain. I have met with the Fairview Mission group several times, and am always impressed for their desire to know more about missions, and their enthusiasm at supporting a wide variety of projects around the world. Sr. Betty Hobbs is the treasurer and this is a brief summary of their work. The quarterly newsletter of the Colegio Moravo Alumni Association (Miami Chapter) is always interesting to me because we get a lot of news about many people we know and love from our years in Nicaragua and Miami. But this issue will give you a flavor of their exciting worldwide fellowship that notes some wonderful achievements. http://moravoalumni.home.att.net is their website. You will be amazed! We are grateful to the Kernersville Newsletter for Br. Vollprecht’s report of his recent visit to Star Mountain. The difficulties and the faithfulness of our workers there is an inspiration to us who have freedom to do our jobs without fear. An eyewitness account about places we read about in the news and on TV has a side we need to hear to understand what is really going on. We are so fortunate to have people like Br. Musomba who can report to us about things happening around the Unity with the view of a person who knows the world we know and the view of a person who has grown up in the third world. His wisdom is appreciated. Br. Robert Iobst is one of those people who have a spirit of concern and a faith in the power of prayer, combined with a worldwide concern for people. He challenges us to pray, and then get out our atlas to find where we are praying for. The fresh challenge every day is a help to think about others rather than complain about our frustrations. Br. Jack Geis always gives us something to think about and challenge us to action. We enjoy the annual Christmas letter from Br. Elijah and Sr.Snehalata from the top of the world. Space did not allow us to include it all but drop them an e-mail – gergansneha@rediffmail.com - and you can get it.

As a result of a growing appreciation of our mission to the Cherokee in the 19th century, and our contact with real live Cherokees, we want to know more and get involved in the 21st century with these wonderful people. With the leadership of Sr. Anna Smith, we are about to do something about it. We are organizing a Cherokee/Moravian Historical Society which will hold its first meeting on Saturday, Feb.21 at 10:30am at the YWCA on Glade Street. Br. Jack Baker, a prominent Cherokee leader will be there. Call me for details.  JHG
