ELIM MORAVIAN HOME IN SOUTH AFRICA Thanks to the generosity of the membership of the British Province to The Wish List Appeal, the residents of the Elim Home are able to listen to music, which they very much enjoy. A fridge, CD/radios and toasters were purchased, and the chicken run completed. The pyjamas and gowns needed for winter are awaiting delivery. Last year in 2005, The Department of Health and the European Union formed a partnership and made funding available for Home based Nursing Care. Elim Home was the only registered Non-Profit Organisation in Elim that applied for this funding and was fortunate to receive it. So now, in addition to caring for the intellectually and physically disabled young people they also render a much needed service for senior citizens and sick people in the community who need nursing care. There are five more ladies who can earn a living through this project, for which a training programme was started in April 2006 with eight trainees who preciously never had the opportunity. After two years training they can be enrolled as auxiliary nurses. This is very exciting because people are getting a study opportunity free, for which they would have had to pay. The Home is in the middle of a four Phase Renovation Project, and about to complete the first stage. Funding is available for all except Phase 4 (toilets and showers) which requires an additional £60,000 Sterling. |
STAR MOUNTAIN REHABILITATION CENTRE The BibleLands news sheet, Lifetimes, reports a gift of over £23,000 to the Star Mountain Rehabilitation Centre, near Ramallah in Palestine to enable them to buy a smart new minibus. The bus collects the day pupils with learning difficulties from nearby villages. “The old bus was so unreliable that children often missed out on days at the Centre, and when the vehicle did work, journeys were long and uncomfortable over the rural roads. The new bus is much more economical, dependable and comfortable, enabling the children to get to the Centre every day to benefit from its caring atmosphere and specialized support”. 250TH ANNIVERSARY IN ANTIGUA The news sheet of the Antigua-Barbuda High Commission reports that Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has commended the Moravian Church for its “unparalleled” role in shaping the minds of the people of Antigua and Barbuda spiritually and educationally. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Anniversary Banquet celebrating the Church’s 250th anniversary. He said that the work of the Church in education and as a spiritual guide, “influencing the moral principles essential to building strong communities, is deserving of our nation’s enduring gratitude.” He also noted that the Moravian Church has been a valuable partner in tackling the problems with young people.
