This is another special issue of ONWARD with lots of news of what is happening around the world in Moravian missions. One of the fine missions of the Moravian Church in South Africa is the Elim Home. It is under the PEC of the South African Province and is learning how to increase the service and facilities through careful planning. Star Mountain continues to serve in spite of hateful war between the Arabs and the Jews. But they have a good reputation and help came recently. The Moravian Church in Antigua has always been strong in education and our schools in the 19th century was so strong that when the British government granted freedom to the slaves, it required a ten year education in the rest of the West Indies, the Moravian Schools were considered so excellent that freedom was granted immediately in 1834 to Antigua. These articles all came from the English Moravian Messenger. The report from the Northern Provincial Synod gives affirmation to the Mission emphasis of the Southern Provincial Synod. The Prayer Focus gives us many reasons to pray everyday all summer. What a wealth of good sharing activity is being done around the world. These two pages were from our contributing editor, Br. Sam Gay. His consecration as a Bishop honors his faithful life, his family and his parents and his siblings, all whose talents and presence were present in the celebration. It was certainly one of the most moving services I have ever attended. My Suggestions for Prayer rely on Br. Spangenberg’s Biblical Theology, the Idea Fidei Fratrum. His ideas are still so fresh and wise after two centuries. On P. 5 we receive the first of what will be many contributions from the new president of the Mission Society, South. Br. Evon Crooks, a member of New Philadelphia, is a native of Jamaica, so brings us the wealth of the rich heritage of our church there. He brings word of the fantastic project in Labrador this summer. It may not solve all the problems, but many lives may be touched and hopefully saved. One of the jobs Br. Evon is seeking to solve is to find someone to take over my job as editor. It is a chance to use the talents and gifts of one of the gifted Moravians here. Consider it! We continue to work on the Trail of Tears Tour ’06. We have room for another 12 people. Join us! Call me for details. It is 12 days, September 14th to 24th. The cost is $950 for most costs. God bless you. JHG |
