PRAYER FOCUS

OCTOBER 2006

Sierra Leone

In Exodus 3 (the story of the call of Moses) we are reminded that when God sees a need in the world, God raises up leaders to minister to those needs.  The Moravian Church began to explore the needs in Sierra Leone in the 1980’s.  But the timing was not right for initiating Moravian “mission work.”  However, God was already raising up leaders to minister to those needs.  Those leaders and followers of Christ, Mohamed and Safie Braima are the focus of our prayer concern this month.

Brother Mohamed shares this information with us, so that we can pray with understanding:

Come January 5th my wife and I will be leaving the USA for Sierra Leone to build a church and a school in our village where we will begin teaching and ministering to our people.  On December 30th I will be terminating my employment with Presbyterian Hospital where I have worked for 18 years as a medical technologist to open a new chapter for which God has been preparing us for all these years.

Having lived in the USA for thirty years and members of the Moravian church in Charlotte since 1977, Safie and I feel God's call to take the message of the 'Good News' to our people.  Over the years, God has blessed us tremendously.  And through the help of this church and the Moravian denomination we have shared these material physical blessings with our people in Sierra Leone by taking humanitarian goods in the form of food and used clothing to them in the refugee camps during the civil war time in that country.

The physical blessings are good-our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ fed the thousands and asked Peter and you and I to care for His sheep.  However, the most important reason, the reason He has to leave the comforts of heaven to come here and die on the cross is to restore the relationship we once had with the Father that was lost on account of sin on our part.  Upon rising from the dead and before ascending to heaven, He asked us to take this message to our brothers and sisters.  Like Peter and all the other disciples, Safie and I have answered that call.  We will be going back to Sierra Leone to take the message of the gospel to our people.

Five to six years ago, at the conclusion of ten years of civil war in Sierra Leone, God impressed upon my heart the necessity to learn more about Him.  Many things transpired to lead to that of course.  I obeyed Him and enrolled in a seminary here in Charlotte called Reformed Theological Seminary.  After four to five years of didactic training, I graduated last May with Minister of Divinity.  Two years into the program God showed me the need of planting a Moravian church in Sierra Leone.  My wife and I have already planted the church but the physical church building and our physical presence is important and that is the reason we are going back to Sierra Leone.

My wife and I need your prayers-lots of them!

We are going back to a place where the demon practice and beliefs of evil powers are great.  We grew up in that environment and it has not changed much.  Also the population of those that are Muslims is much greater.

We ask that you pray that:

·         We will remain steadfast in our walk with the Lord

·         We will be able to stand firm in the word

·         God will give us the word to speak at all times

·        IN ALL WE DO THAT GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED!
