1. School resumes in many parts of the world in this month, so let’s pray for Moravian schoolteachers and students around the world. This is a worthy cause! 2. The oldest Moravian school still in service is the girls and boys schools in Bethlehem. The Moravian Academy is still serving on the same grounds in the elementary school downtown. 1742 is the founding date. Pray for this fine school. 3. 1780 Friedland, W-S, NC. SUNDAY. The secondary campus of the academy is at suburban Green Pond. This beautiful campus is about 5 miles north of the downtown campus. 4. Moravian College for Women and Moravian College for Men merged in 1954 and is now considered the 6th oldest college in America. It is a leader in music, pre-med, and business, etc. 5. 1869 Main ST, Northfield, MN. A boys school was began in 1743 in Nazareth. From 1745-1759 it was moved to a number of locations. In June 1759 it returned to Nazareth and served until it closed in 1929. 6. Moravian Theological Seminary was begun as an outgrowth of Nazareth Hall in 1807. The Seminary moved between Nazareth and Bethlehem until 1893 when it located on the present site in Bethlehem. 7. In Bethlehem, we can pray for the Moravian Academy, elementary and secondary; Moravian College, a coed college with two campuses; and Moravian Theological Seminary. 8. In Lititz, about 90 miles SE of Bethlehem, there is a fine girls’ school. Linden Hall was begun in 1748. It is perhaps the oldest Moravian School in America on the same campus. 9. In the South we have Salem Academy and College, founded in 1772, the oldest and one of few wormen’s schools in the South. An innovative 2nd career coed school meets at night and on Saturdays to train older students to achieve goals for leadership and education. 10. 1911 Daggett, MI. Christian Education Sunday. We have had other schools in Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota, which served for short times but could not survive due to financial needs. 11. 1854 Watertown, WI. The 1st US kindergarten opened here. We are open to new ideas in education in our congregations, in nursing and other needs that present themselves. Pray we may never stop learning. 12. The Moravian Music Foundation carries on an education task in teaching about the extensive amounts of music in our archives. It enriches our worship and reaches out to other denominations that do not have the treasures we have. 13. 1893 Union Cross, W-S, NC 1896 Mizpah, Rural Hall, NC. The foundation holds workshops on hymn and tune writing that bring out gifts in people. 14. Our Archives in Bethlehem has taught hundreds of researchers to learn to read German Script that opens the vast recourses of both Archives to translation. 15. 2003 Holly Springs, NC. Looking at the schools in Moravian provinces, we find a rich ministry. We can only mention the highlights. In Alaska we have a seminary with Br. Tom Conrad as the new dean. |
